From the earliest days of the New World, Boston, Massachusetts carved out a prominent place for itself. Back then it was known as the centre of Puritanism, and also quickly emerged as the most important port town in the area. It was clear by the early 1700s that Boston would be New England's capital city. When England's infamous "taxation without representation" edict was imposed in Boston, residents planted the seeds of the revolution with the Boston Massacre and Boston Tea Party. The city also played a progressive role in rallying for the abolition of slavery during the Underground Railroad days. Continuing a tradition of intellectualism started in the Puritan era, Boston is now known as one of America's preeminent university centres.
Your car hire will be available for convenient pick-up at Logan International Airport, and Boston makes a great starting point for many enjoyable side trips. History buffs will love Lexington & Concord: The Revolutionary War saw some of its first action here in 1775, and many parts of the region still look like they did back then. Lexington is where the British and the colonists first battled, and another major clash is commemorated at nearby Minute Man National Historical Park.
For travellers with a hired car, Cape Ann is another popular side trip. Often referred to as "Massachusett's other cape" (Cape Cod being the one more well-known), Cape Ann has plenty to distinguish itself. Boasting breathtaking ocean vistas, excellent seafood, and great shopping, this area is perfect for a day trip or a longer stay.
A visit to hallowed Fenway Park is recommended for anyone with even a passing interest in sports. This gem has played host to the Boston Red Sox baseball team since 1912, making it the oldest ballyard in the country. Boston's diehard followers (called "Red Sox Nation") revere this quirky diamond for its strange angles and 37-foot-high left field wall called the "Green Monster." You can take a tour nearly any day of the year.
Art fans should make a point of visiting Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, considered one of the country's finest. The collection is particularly strong in American art, offering masterpieces by the likes of Edward Hopper, Winslow Homer, and John Singleton Copley. The gallery's French Impressionist collection is also superb.
