One of the most bustling airports in the United Kingdom, Stansted Airport is situated 48 kilometres northeast of London, in Essex County’s Uttlesford District. The airport allows convenient access to the M11 Motorway, and hosts several car hire companies in its terminal. Cambridge, London, Harwich, Colchester, Clacton-on-Sea, and many other holiday destinations are all easy drives from Stansted Airport.
Colchester is a good bet for travellers, especially those interested in history. Colchester lays claim to being the oldest town in all of England, although historians of Marazion and Abingdon may beg to differ. In any case, Colchester is at worst the third-oldest town in England, and home to some amazing historic buildings, including the medieval Colchester Castle. Inside the castle is the Colchester Castle Museum, with impressive exhibits dedicated to chronicling the early years of Roman Colchester.
Another rewarding and easy side trip from Stansted, especially for families on holiday, is Clacton-on-Sea. This seaside town is home to Clacton Pier, an attraction sure to please your children. The pier features an indoor amusement centre, with video games, rides, and much more.
If you’re a fan of festivals and are flying into Stansted Airport in the summer, you won’t find a better destination than nearby London. Trooping the Colour, the Queen’s big birthday party, is held in June. Around the same time, the signature grass courts of the All-England Tennis Club host professional tennis’s most hallowed tournament, Wimbledon. The largest gay and lesbian festival in Europe, London Pride, is also a huge summer draw, and the celebratory Notting Hill Carnival rounds out the summer in August, as revelers fill the streets of the West End.
