Fuerteventura is one of the seven major Canary Islands lying off Africa’s coast. The first people to settle in Fuerteventura are believed to have been North Africans, who were followed later, in the 11th century BC, by the Phoenicians. The island is also mentioned by Homer in “The Odyssey.” In the mid-1800s, when Spain’s Queen Isabella II extended the free trade zone to the Canary Islands, the island’s current personality began to emerge. By 1940, Fuerteventura had an airport, and by the time the mid-1960s rolled around it had become a hot spot for travellers on holiday.

An alluring resort spot for travellers is Caleta de Fueste, boasting several hotels, restaurants, and boutiques. Its beaches are known as optimal spots for active pursuits such as windsurfing, sailing, and diving. The waters near the resort are known for their dolphin and turtle populations. Caleta de Fueste is also home to Fuerteventura’s lone golf course.

If you take a drive north to the Corralejo harbour, you can catch a ride on a glass bottom boat (El Majorero) over to the islet of Lobos. Nature enthusiasts will be thrilled by Los Lobos Natural Park, a haven for a multitude of flora and fauna.

Behind Tenerife, Fuerteventura is the second-largest Canary Island, and boasts the longest stretch of beachfront, with over 150 beaches spanning its coastline. The peninsula of Jandía is an attractive area in the southwest, and is the location of Fuerteventura’s highest peak, Pico de Jandía. The Jandía peninsula’s western edge is acclaimed for having some of the island’s most beautiful beaches, as well as quality surfing.
